Greece Wildfires

UPDATE ON PROJECT GREECE WILDFIRES, PART 1: 2018

2018 GREECE WILDFIRE

7/24/18 Lyreio Orphanage & Mati-Rafina Fire Victims Emergency Relief

After receiving the devastating news of 101 deaths in Mati, we worked endless hours and got the Greek community involved via social media, News-12 coverage, and hosted an event at Ovelia, Astoria, to collect medical supplies that were needed in Rafina. We delivered these items, approximately ten suitcases, ourselves on August 6th, 2018, and volunteered with Antidimarxo Tseva of Rafina to make sure the items reached the local medical center we worked with. In September 2018, 9 H.U.G.S. Organization shipped 80 boxes via Hermes International Movers of first aid and personal hygiene supplies for those affected by the fires in Mati, Rafina. In October 2018, we visited Lureio Orphanage in Rafina. They host approximately 60 children and 50 elderly adults who unfortunately had to be moved to other locations after the wildfire burned down the facility. We raised awareness in our community, and with the help of our supporters in the Tri-State Area, we collected $5,000 to help build Lyreio Orphanage again.

WILDFIRES PROJECT, PART 2

WILDFIRE EYBOIA: As these annual fires continued to roar year after year, 9 hugs decided to dig deeper into this issue and create the reforestation mission in collaboration with renowned and influential journalist Dimitri Phillipidis, as well as the great philanthropists and owners of Ovelia Peter & Chris Giannakas. An event was hosted where a monetary fund began to help restore what was lost. We are currently in the process of reviving acres of land by planting olive trees at Lyreio Orphanage, dedicating each tree to their sponsor's name request. Irrigation is in place, and over 250 trees will be planted. Olive trees will bring a prosperous future to the children at Lureio Orphanage. This will be an ongoing planting project, and we hope you will join us in our effort. Once this project is completed, we will continue our project in Euboia, where the devastating fire of 2022 destroyed acres of olive trees and residential areas.
